Let’s Have a Cuppa: June 2020

Hello and welcome to all you beautiful people. No your eyes aren’t deceiving you, I am indeed back. Over the past month I’ve been dealing with a bit of a health scare. It was nothing serious and I’m pretty much back to normal now. No need to worry.

I started experiencing heart palpitations, something I’ve never felt before so first dismissed what I was feeling as heart palpitations. I was hyper aware of my heart. I couldn’t hear or feel it beating, I was just very aware it was beating in my chest. Then I’d have moments where it felt like my heart had stopped or was about to. Thankfully it hadn’t, no pains in my chest, but this wave of fear would go through me. I’d breath deeply just to make sure I was still alive and okay. I came to the conclusion the sensation I was feeling was my heart skipping a beat. Terrifying if you’ve never experienced it before. On top of that I started to feel like there was a lump in my throat, at times I thought I wouldn’t be able to swallow anything. Thankfully that wasn’t the case but that didn’t stop the discomfort and occasional lack of appetite. I looked up the symptoms online and I think I was experiencing some kind of chemical imbalance in my thyroid gland. It wasn’t swollen so the problem couldn’t have been that serious. I changed my diet to see if that would get me back to normal. I can happily say since doing that I feel like myself again. I’m ready to get back in the swing of things.

Besides worrying about my body I have been doing other things to distract my mind between heart palpitation episodes.

I’ve started doing regular walks which is very refreshing. A daily practise I should’ve been doing long before lockdown started and this health scare of mine. Even a short walk around my neighbourhood greatly benefits me physically and mentally. I encourage others to add the practise into their daily routine. A twenty or thirty mintue walk isn’t much time out of your day.

The rest of Rick and Morty season 4 started and finished. It was an interesting season and now we have another long wait for the next one. I know there are mixed opinions about it but watching film theory talk about the episodes made me appreciate them more. At last Harley Quinn has graced UK TV screens. I am so happy. Harley is one of my all time favourite characters and the show gives her her own voice. It breaks her away from the Joker with comedy and delicous violence. Plus Ivy, another supervillain queen, isn’t over sexualised. I watched a new sci-fi show called Pandora. It has a similar feel to The Vampire Diaries for me except it’s in the sci-fi genre. Plenty of teen/young adult angst to go around. I liked it and look forward to it’s already confirmed second season. It took awhile but I finally got the whole family to sit down and watch the Mandalorian. It’s such a good series. A must watch for Star Wars fans.

Moviewise I’ve been watching a lot, I mean a lot of terrible horror movies. Some were entertaining, others were boring and there were moments when you just have to ask why. I love the horror, I really do. There are some truly amazing films within the genre but there is a lot of garbage.

I haven’t been playing many games lately. In preparation for the Last of Us Part 2 I’ve been replaying the first one. I was more than excited for the sequel and overjoyed now that I’m playing it. I want to wait till I’ve finished the game before I comment but I will say I’ve found there have been more shocking moments then heartbreaking ones. The other game I’ve been playing a lot is Dead By Daylight. I only recently bought it and instantly fell in love. It’s made so much better by playing with friends, keeping the repetitive gameplay interesting with conversation and laughs.

I’ve also been working on my first book. Progress is slow. That’s fine for now. This is what I want to do and I decided it was high time I get started. I like writing for competitions, I find it good practice but I was becoming restless. I’ve started building a fantasy world not only for the setting of my first book but for many other books and stories to live in. I wanted to jump straight in to writing when I figured out the story but I quickly realised I need to establish a lot of things about my world before doing that.

We’re at the tail end of June now so there isn’t much left to aim for by the end of the month. I will definitely be doing a July Let’s Have a Cuppa, on time this month, so for now I’ll just say I’m focused on getting back into the rhythm of blog work. I have a post already written and ready to go. I have some ideas to introduce because this baby is still developing and changing. Some things will work and others won’t but I won’t know what does until I give them a try.

Let’s not forget that June is Pride month, a perfect time to discover new creatives within the LGBTQ+ community, although they should always be supported. Celebrate the characters that are good representation and let people feel seen. Happy Pride month to all you beautiful souls.

Now for the big paragraph. While I’ve been recuperating the plot for 2020 has escalated further. This time I believe it’s an important cause and working towards the greater good. We are in a time of major change and it’s not going to end anytime soon. It baffles me that the world is still smothered in inequality in this day and age. Everyone deserves the right to feel safe and comfortable in their own skin. It’s your body, not like you can leave it and get a new one. Right now Black Lives Matter protests are happening all over the world and have been happening for many weeks. Already we can see change is in motion. Yes it’s small and slow at the moment but the longer we stand together, making our voices heard, the more change that will happen. To all the people of colour let your voices be heard. Bring the change that will let you feel safe to walk down the street. To do normal everyday activities without fear or prejudice. I encourage everyone to be an ally. Be an ally for Black Lives Matter. For all the people you know and all of those you don’t. For all the future generations. Keep the change moving forward. If there are things you don’t fully understand do some research. Just do research in general. Join protests or donate, if you can. Support black creatives. There are creators posting videos whose advertising proceeds go to Black Lives Matter. Watch some of their content. Ultimately use your words and your voice. Words are incredibly powerful. Words can change hearts and minds. If all of us come together we can make the world a better place. One filled with love for all. People’s lives won’t have to be made harder because of the colour of their skin or who they choose to love or what gender they identify as. I never intended for this to be a space for political or social issues but there are some things you can’t stay quiet about. The continued unfair treatment, brutality and unnecessary deaths of people of colour is one of those issues. Reading experiences people are sharing is eye opening enough. I know I might get things wrong, I probably already have but I want to speak my piece. I want to be a good ally. I want there to be equality and racial equality is the change we are seeking now. This is the first domino towards racial equality.

Thank you all for reading and being patient with me. Please all look after yourselves. I’ll see you in the next post.

Time to Meet the Spring Troupe

Hello and welcome to all you beautiful people, today we’re continuing our quest to save a theatre and it’s company from destruction. Of course I can only be talking about A3! So without further ado let’s get into it.

The Spring troupe is the first of the four troupes to be formed. Spring brings new beginnings and this is most definitely a new beginning for the Mankai Company. I can see what you did there developers.

Already I can spot the formula for each story section. Tachibana finds five guys to form a troupe. They start rehearsals. Some of the boys are good or have good instincts. The others have a lot of work to do. The play is written. Rehearsals start with read throughs that are a bit rocky. Tachibana has a scene with each of the boys, encouraging them or discovering something about them. Rehearsals improve. Tickets aren’t selling well. The troupe comes together and manages to sell every ticket, closing night being the most important day. Finally they perform the show. I promise there’s more substance than what I’ve laid out here but that’s the basic outline.

The Spring troupe’s first show is Romeo and Julius, a reimagining of Romeo and Juliet about friendship and not romance. Although honestly I still get a romantic vibe from the dialogue and acting. Whether it’s a romance or not there’s enough there to fuel the shippers’ imaginations. Through the Spring troupe’s story the group suffers from a lack of teamwork. They’re all stuck in their own heads. A mindset that can be detrimental to a play, believe me. That all changes when the troupe decides to spend a night on the theatre’s stage. From then on in rehearsals all the actors noticeably improve. As I’ve already stated, at the end of the troupe’s story they perform to a full house on closing night, receiving a standing ovation.

So now I should probably talk about the boys. I mean they are the main characters in the story. And the reason why we’re here.

Sakuya Sakuma

Sakuya is the first member of the new Mankai Company and the Spring Troupe. He’s like a puppy, full of energy and always optimistic. Ever since he was young he’s been in love with acting and the theatre. Now he wants to give it a go himself. He’s got a lot of training to do but he puts his all into every rehearsal. His upbeat personality and position as lead in their first show is what leads to Sakuya being chosen as leader of the Spring Troupe. He’s a ball of sunshine that you can’t help but like. He’s a little naive but eager to learn. Sakuya tries his best to stop any fighting and keep the group together. He’s the best choice as leader. I like Sakuya but he’s not really my type when it comes to these types of stories, i.e. otomes and dating sims.

Masumi Usui

Masumi joined the Mankai Company after seeing Tachibana doing a street act with Sakuya and Matsukawa. It’s love at first sight and Tachibana becomes his whole world. So he’s an obsessive stalker, kind of. He’s harmless really. He doesn’t force himself on her but also doesn’t understand that Tachibana isn’t interested in him. Or rather she can’t be because there aren’t specific routes. There’s also the fact he’s 16 and Tachibana is in her twenties, gonna have to wait a few years there. I believe Masumi falls under the cool aloof type. He’s a good actor, despite having no experience, that could do with thinking about other things besides Tachibana. Oh wait, he’s a teenager so that’s unlikely. Although I think his upbringing factors into why he becomes so attached to Tachibana. Again I like him but he’s still not my type when I play these games and nothing has really grabbed me yet with his story/personality.

Tsuzuru Minagi

Tsuzuru is the third member to join the Spring Troupe. He was on the hunt for a troupe with a dorm, Mankai Company perfectly fits his needs. He wants to be a playwright and uses his talents to write plays for all the troupes to perform. He prefers to write characters specifically for each actor. He’s a hard worker. To help look after his 7 little brothers Tsuzuru worked many different part time jobs, picking up many different skills. When it comes to acting however he has no prior experience. He is a sweet guy who continues to fill the big brother role despite trying to strike out on his own. Tsuzuru is someone I could see myself dating if he was real. A nice guy who also loves writing and likes spending time in libraries reading. He even looks up to a slightly older actor, a 3rd year at his university, who is such a genuine guy, wanting to be more like him. Thinking about self improvement. But Tsuzuru is not my favourite.

Itaru Chigasaki

Itaru is another young man looking for a place to stay so he joins the Mankai Company. On the surface he’s a heartthrob that has his life together. Mature, kind and sociable. But his real personality is a far cry from the mask he wears. Itaru is a serious gaming addict. Everything he does is so that he can quickly return to his games. In my opinion he’s the one that goes through the most character development. At first he’s lazy, thinks acting is easy and spends all of his freetime in his room alone playing games. He goes from this solitary, single minded person to becoming part of a team, making friends and gaining a passion for acting. Itaru is my favourite of the Spring Troupe boys. I know gaming addiction is serious and should be treated as such. Games are fun but when they start taking over your life it’s time to get some help. But of course I’m attracted to a fellow gamer. I’d be right there playing games alongside him. We’re both competitive people which can be either a good or bad thing, good thing this is fiction. His character design is very attractive, I find it even more attractive when he ties his floofy fringe up when he needs to concentrate. I very much stand Itaru.

Citron is the last member to join the Spring Troupe. He’s a foreign exchange student shrouded in mystery. He’s still learning japanese, funny thing to say since I’m reading the story in english, so he gets his words mixed up sometimes. He’s always in a cheerful mood and is there to cheer up the group when they need it. Citron is disheartened at his lack of lines in the first show but quickly switches his attitude to wanting to do his best. I find Citron a great source of comic relief, you know a scenes gonna be good when Citron’s involved. I don’t like him in a romantic way but he’s one of my favourite characters. The Spring Troupe wouldn’t be the same without him.

In conclusion, the Spring Troupe story might be an insight into the skeleton of what the other season’s stories hold but that doesn’t mean they’re all painted the same. The characters determine what challenges the troupe will face and how they’ll deal with them. The Spring Troupe are all likeable guys who provide an entertaining first quarter for the overall story. Thank you all for reading and I’ll see you in the next post.

Let’s Have a Cuppa: May 2020

Hello and welcome to all you beautiful people. This is Let’s Have a Cuppa. On the 1st of each month I’ll be doing a catch up on what’s going on in my life. Having a look at the past month, what I’m doing right now and what I hope to achieve over the next month. Kind of like a long journal entry. Who might be interested in reading that? I have no idea but there must be someone out there. I do know it’s good to have a check in every so often. Good for the mind. So without further ado let’s get into it.

April has been a month. I think we all know why. First I want to say thank you to everyone who has followed my relatively small blog. The content can only get better, I promise. I’ve technically uploaded one post a week this month but I want to do more. One problem I have is lack of confidence. I’m too focused on what others might think. Like I’m worried about posting too much of one thing. Right now I would be happy to do several posts on Anime/Otome games. Really it shouldn’t bother me and I should post about what I want. Is this entertaining? Is my writing any good? Am I giving misinformation? All self destructive questions that plague both my blog work and story writing. Even if you know that you have to keep doing something to get better at it, self doubt and the fear of failure can still hold you back. This is a battle that I know most creative people fight against. I’m just happy I no longer fall into depression. This is a mental area I still need to improve. All I can do is be myself and deal with those moments as they come. When in doubt, be yourself. Something else I need to figure out is the balance between my blog work and competition writing. At the moment I think it will vary depending on the competition rules. Over in social media world I think I’ve been doing quite well, at least on Instagram. Granted I’m not as consistent as I could be but considering before I never really posted anything. In my eyes that’s a big improvement. Follows on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are always appreciated.

So what have I been up to? Buckle your seatbelts because there’s a lot to cover. As you can gather I’ve been working on a short story. It follows an apprentice searching for a new power source to prevent her Master from losing his magic with a bit more to it. I’ve entered this fantasy tale into the Bristol Short Story Prize. It’ll be awhile before you guys get to read it but I’ll keep you updated on what happens. I’ve also had this urge to write lyrics for some reason. Bare in mind I’ve never dabbled in that world before. I’ve got to do more research before I give it a go. We’ll see what happens. I do have friends who are musicians and have beautiful singing voices so who knows. Something might come of it.

I am still reading The Vampire Lestat. Two months I’ve been clawing my way through this book. It’s not bad, I just want to move onto something else. I can already hear you asking, ‘why didn’t you just read a different book and come back later?’ Because I like doing one thing at a time and I know I would forget what I’ve already read. But I’m close to the end now. I might even post a review. I’ve also started the habit of listening to audiobooks whilst in the bath. At the moment it’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, narrated by Stephen Fry. Not my first venture through this tale but I am noticing different things when it’s being read to me. And I’m not 5 or 6.

I haven’t really thought about talking about music on here but why not? I’ve been really interested in listening to Powerwolf lately, particularly Demons are a Girl’s Best Friend and Sanctified in Dynamite. A new band discovery for me is Once Monsters. They don’t have many songs but I like everyone I’ve listened to so far. I hope to hear more from them. Imagine Dragons Natural has been on my repeat list, alongside It’s Terror Time Again by Skycycle. You know, the chase song in Scooby Doo on Zombie Island. A bit random I know. Doing music clip quizzes on Sporcle has been occupying my time as well. I’ve heard clips of songs I’ve not heard in years as well as being exposed to new things.

Game wise I haven’t played anything new, even though I have a huge backlog. I regularly play online games with my brother, Overwatch being a main one we usually play. There is a new hero that again I may or may not talk about here. Another game I’ve been wanting to revisit is Vermintide 2. Kerillian is my girl.

I’ve been dabbling with a handful of mobile games. I revisited Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery with the intention of catching up on the main story. I was greeted with events that ultimately requires you to spend money to reach the end. Oh well. I’m stuck at home, constantly connected to wifi, might as well enjoy my Hogwarts adventure. Obey Me! Is one I’ve been playing for awhile. I think since it’s release. I love it so don’t be surprised if you see full length posts about it. Another one of those card collecting games but it keeps me coming back. I won’t say anymore because I might start rambling so I’ll just move on. All of you know I’m playing A3! I’m trying not to wiz through the story since they’ve made all of it available. I just hope I get to keep all the chapters unlocked after I’ve read them and all this is over. Finally I’ve been playing Uta no Prince Sama Shining Live. Yet another game where you collect cards but it’s mainly a rhythm game. No surprise all the music is from Utapri, many songs from the members of Starish and Quartet Night. There is a story but from what I can tell it’s a means to unlock more songs. Wow! You can tell a lot about me from my choice of mobile games. I say C’est la vie.

There’s quite a bit TV wise that I’m watching. First I’ll cover new and weekly shows. Batwoman has at last graced UK screens and I’m not disappointed. Granted I’m not anxiously waiting for each new episode but I enjoy sitting down to watch it. Sometimes I envy America for having the DC streaming service. Please can I have it. Please. Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is like a fusion of Glee and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. I highly recommend everyone to watch it. The most recent episode featured a wonderful scene with a deaf character signing Fight Song. It’s beautiful. On Netflix I’m watching the latest season of Drag Race. Not much else to say there. Last Week Tonight is my only source of news at the moment. Honestly I’d rather stay updated on current events via a comedy show. At least it’s a little less depressing. Brooklyn 99 season 7 is now airing here. So happy to see Jake and Amy’s relationship going to the next level. Two crime shows I’m watching are Murdoch Mysteries and Miss Scarlett and the Duke. Two shows that could easily have a crossover episode but that likely won’t happen. I smell fanfiction potential. Any other Murdoch fans out there? Anime wise I have been sucked into My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! Caterina is one of the smartest dumbest characters I’ve ever seen. I’m hooked and plan on reading the light novels. Finally there’s this Ghost Adventures series called Serial Killer Ghosts. They go to different locations supposedly haunted by the ghosts of serial killers. Two shows I’m rewatching are Leverage and Kim Possible. Leverage is essentially modern day robin hood and Kim Possible is a nostalgia trip for me. Two anime I’m working my way through are Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, I’m on Diamond is Unbreakable, and Fruits Basket (2019).

For May there are two writing competitions I plan to enter. Both with shorter word limits so I should be able to balance blog work better. That being said I aim to up my number of posts to the equivalent of at least two posts a week. May or may not sound like a lot but to me it might be a challenge. I also want to be more consistent with uploads on my both my blog and socials. Finally I want to learn and practise using GIMP so that I can make my own images. Baby steps at the moment.

And there we have it. The future is a bit uncertain right now but that doesn’t mean everything has to stop. Looking back helps to improve for the future. No matter how small. Let’s make May a magical month. Thank you for reading and I’ll see you all in the next post.

Bring on the Bunnies

Hello and welcome to all you beautiful people. Happy month of Easter everyone. To celebrate this time of chocolate bunnies, egg hunting and spring arriving in full force let’s look at some bunnies in fiction. These are some of my favourite fictional rabbits in no particular order. Without further ado let’s get into it.

Officer Judy Hopps

Judy Hopps | Zootopia Wiki | Fandom
Zootopia Wiki

First up is none other than Officer Judy Hopps from one of the best animated films, Zootopia. Or Zootropolis to those of us in the UK and a few other countries. I love Judy. All she wants to do is help people and make the world a better place. Judy overcomes every obstacle in her way, always with a positive attitude. On her journey to achieving her dreams she faces many challenges and stigma from people set in their ways. Never does she let it get her down, in fact she goes out of her way to prove those people wrong. Not only is she extremely driven, she’s also very kind. She gets herself and Nick out of some trouble because of an act of kindness, saving someone’s life instead of catching the bad guy. Judy is so inspiring, especially for young children.

Usami | Danganronpa Wiki | FANDOM powered by Wikia
Danganronpa Wiki

Monomi is a mascot character in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and appears in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak. Originally she was a rabbit magical girl named Usami but is forcefully transformed by Monokuma to resemble him when he takes control. He renames her Monomi. He only changes her appearence not her personality. Right from the beginning the students don’t trust, finding her overly sweet nature and low intelligence annoying. Being treated like this doesn’t affect Monomi because she only wants to help and protect her students. Whether they appreciate it or not doesn’t matter to her; she’s used to being underappreciated. Monomi is kindhearted and just wants her students to foster love and friendship. Monomi is the good mascot character to counteract Monokuma’s bad, even though she can’t do much to stop him. I will admit I found Monomi annoying at times but sometimes she could be useful. And there are moments of dialogue she has that brings the students spirits back up amidst all the despair surrounding them.

Reisen Udongein Inaba

Reisen Udongein Inaba, red eyes, manga, Touhou

Reisen Udongein Inaba is from the world of Touhou, first appearing as a stage 5 boss in Imperishable Night. She is a refugee moon rabbit who settles down in Gensokyo with notorious moon fugitives Kaguya and Eirin. I will admit I don’t play Touhou games or know much about the lore apart from what I hear from my brother. Reisen is one of the characters that caught my attention. I love her design and her fluffy tail is adorable. I find the image of her holding her right hand in finger gun shape cool, implying that’s how she fires her danmaku (bullet hell). Her main ability is to make people insane with her eyes, hence why her character theme is titled Lunatic Eyes ~ Invisible Full Moon. Her personality is described as carefree and crazed. She can quickly adapt to the circumstances surrounding her. I don’t have much else to say, I just like her.

E. Aster Bunnymund

E. Aster Bunnymund | Rise of the Guardians Wiki | Fandom
Rise of the Guardians Wiki

E. Aster Bunnymund is Rise of the Guardians re-imagining of the Easter Bunny. He is a badass. Not only is he a warrior rabbit that travels across the galaxy but his weapons of choice are enchanted boomerangs and exploding easter eggs. Bunnymund is the Guardian of Hope. His home lies underneath Australia which explains why he developed an Australian accent. He is a cool, calm and brilliant warrior. He takes great pride in Easter and the season surrounding it, Spring. I love Rise of the Guardians and think it’s a very underrated film. I like a lot of the main cast. I always saw Bunnymund as a badass. He’s voiced by Hugh Jackman. Can’t get much cool then that.

Cream the Rabbit

Cream the Rabbit (Character) - Giant Bomb
Giant Bomb

Cream from Sonic the Hedgehog is adorable, do I need to say anymore? She first appears in Sonic Advance 2. Something I always found odd about Cream was her method of flight. Wouldn’t her ears get tangled up or worse. I guess it’s similar to Tails and no need to question it. Cream is generally happy, polite and courteous. Even towards Eggman. She is hardworking and more than happy to help out her friends however she can. Again, do I need to say anything more than that she’s adorable?

Rabbit of Caerbannog

Rabbit of Caerbannog | Monty Python Wiki | Fandom
Monty Python Wiki

Rabbit of Caerbannog, better known as the Killer Rabbit, is a key antagonist in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. He’s so iconic and ferocious that he shows up in the musical adaptation, Spamalot. What appears to be a cute white bunny quickly turns into a rabid beast killing all in it’s path. Not a bunny to be messed with. The star of one of my favourite scenes in the film.

Thumper | Disney Wiki | Fandom
Disney Wiki

Thumper from Bambi is the best friend of the title character. He is mischievous and takes Bambi under his wing, showing him the ways of the forest. It’s been years since I last watched Bambi but I know it was a part of my childhood. The scene I remember most is when Bambi and Thumper meet Flower. I remember their childhood days the most. Especially little Thumper showing Bambi how to do things.

Dandelion- Wishes Brought to You Wiki
Jihae | Dandelion - Wishes Brought To You Wiki | Fandom
Dandelion- Wishes Brought to You Wiki

Jihae is one of the love interests in Dandelion- Wishes Brought To You, a korean otome game. Jihae is my favourite out of the three bunny characters. He’s gorgeous, even in bunny form. Those eyes. He’s a loyal knight to Jieun and is very protective of him. Jihae’s devotion to Jieun is shown to be completely selfless, bordering on obsessive. Before being romanced he is rather reserved but will express his disdain for the cat characters. On his route he is the perfect gentleman and occasionally acts shyer around the heroine. At times his jealous side will come out mostly because of Jisoo, who sees Jihae as a rival. The heroine helps Jihae overcome his self consciousness and dependency issues.

Harriet | Ghost Wiki | Fandom
Ghost Master Wiki

I doubt many people know of this game but one of my favourite fictional bunnies is Harriet from Ghost Master. She’s a trickster spirit whose most useful abilities are shapeshift, ethereal gift and abhorrent apparition. The latter can pretty much terrify or drive people insane, especially the mortal she’s taken the shape of. Harriet is one of those spirits who harbours a sincere interest in mortals, wanting to make friends with them. After I unlock her I pretty much end up taking her on every future map. It’s not surprising considering her character design but she does have quite a sexual tone to her voice. Let’s just say she probably introduced a number of furries to that world.

File:Dawn Buneary.png - Bulbapedia, the community-driven ...

I had to include a bunny pokemon and I chose Buneary. Specifically Dawn’s Buneary from the Diamond and Pearl seasons of the anime. Already Buneary has a cute design but Dawn’s Buneary uses that to her advantage when competing in contests. In addition she improvises with her moves to stand out more, primarily using her ice beam. She is a cheery, kind and helpful pokemon. Also Dawn’s Buneary has a crush on Ash’s Pikachu and it’s adorable.

Bonus: Daisy

ArtStation - Doom Slayer and Daisy - DOOM 2016, Ian Nielsen

As a bonus we have Daisy. The death of this little bunny in Doom sparked a rage in Doomguy that will never be extinguished. Daisy can be found hidden somewhere in every level of the recently released Doom Eternal.

In conclusion, there are many more fictional bunnies out there but these are a few of my favourites. I either know a lot about them, adore their designs or both. Hopefully you’ve seen some of your favourites too and hopefully you’ve been introduced to something new. Thank you all for reading and I’ll see you in the next post.

Time to Save the Mankai Company

Hello and welcome to all you beautiful people. For those who have read my post looking at the spring anime for this year it will come as no surprise that I’ve started playing A3! I’m still playing through it so what I’m going to do is talk about the different sections of the story as I go, starting with the prologue. So without further ado let’s get into it.

A3! Act! Addict! Actor! Is a mobile character/card collecting otome game. Developed and published by LIBER Entertainment, creators of primarily mobile games. The game was first released in Japan January 27th 2017 for both Iphone and Android. The English translated version was released October 23rd 2019. The main story is fully voiced, apart from the heroine, like most otome games. As you already know the game has already received an anime adaptation but there is also a manga available to read. Other material I’ve found are CDs. What I’ve played so far hasn’t had a focus on musicals but  I’m happy to see they’ve released songs. I quite like the OP and I want to listen to more.

Now before I get into the story I want to talk about the “gameplay” if you can call it that. It makes sense to look at these elements first since this is a character/card collecting game. Though unlike other character/card collecting games I’ve played this one’s primary focus is the story. Story parts are unlocked by levelling up. To level up you do practise sessions with the boys. During the session you can either tap to cycle through the lessons or enable the auto feature. For something like this I think the auto feature is useful. By doing practises small scenes with the character you are doing the session with are unlocked. These are cute little scenes between the character and heroine related to rehearsals. It’s details like this that have kept me coming back to play the game.

A3! App

The cards you collect unlock backstage scenes as you level them up. I feel these backstage stories are where the real otome elements come in. They’re short, what I would call, romantic scenes between the boy and heroine. Not to mention scenes of the boys interacting with each other can also be unlocked. Being able to unlock these stories gives players a reason to continue playing beyond that main story. It also encourages you to collect more cards and to level them up. Another way to gain experience for levelling up is by putting on shows. Both shows and practise sessions require energy to do. Shows use a different energy type to practises so when you can’t do anymore of one you can move onto the other. Using premiare tickets you can even watch the shows in the theatre. They’re a cute a five minute show that you can watch. You can see the characters act out the play in chibi form. It is adorable.

A3! App

Other features include the boys doing street theatre to earn cash for increasing the actors card stats. Along with cash you also need to collect items to be able to do that. Finally you can add friends and give each other flowers to earn friendship points. Friendship points are used for tryouts, which is how you collect cards. I think the way this system is setup has kept me interested in the game. Story and characters are why I play these types of things and if it’s relatively easy to unlock new story parts I can put up with the other aspects of the game.

I think most people would describe the art style as generic or nothing special. That might be true. To me it looks like what you’d typically see from anime and I like that style. It’s familiar and I’ve always thought it was pretty. I like the backgrounds and character designs. The CGs have a different look. They feel brighter and animated, breathing life into the characters. If you’re a fan of the typical anime style then you’ll like the art for A3 as much as I do.

I’ve already mentioned that the main story is fully voiced and I think it’s done well. I’ve found that I tend to like the japanese casting. The voices generally suit the characters and the emotion comes through. Whether it sounds like that to me because I don’t speak Japanese I don’t know. The important thing for me is whether my immersion is being broken or not. For all the characters I’ve encountered so far the voice direction has been good. I feel that’s the same with all the characters. I’m interested to hear the casting for the heroine in the anime.

Now it’s storytime. You, the player, can choose the first name for Miss Tachibana. Or you can use her default name Izumi. At the very beginning of the prologue we get a glimpse of the future. Here we see the Spring troupe about to go on stage. It’s closing night and it’s a full house. Cut to the present. On Veluda Way Tachibana is looking for a particular theatre. While wandering around she spots someone in trouble and rushes to help. A young man also passing by does the same. But all is well. This is a street act, a regular occurrence on Veluda Way. The actors performing are from the God troupe, one of the best troupes in the district. The young man who stopped to help asks them about joining. Ultimately he decides against joining because they don’t provide accomodation. This is a great introduction to the way Veluda Way works and what is normal in this world of theatres. The rules of this world are being established for the player. Witnessing the God troupe actors also introduces competition and generally shows off the standard of acting within the district.

A3! App

Tachibana moves on and finds the theatre she’s been looking for. The Mankai Theatre. But it’s about to be torn down by a yakuza looking guy. Tachibana’s words, not mine. Before anything can happen Tachibana intervenes. She manages to get them to stop long enough so she can watch what might be the Mankai Company’s last performance. It doesn’t go well. The play is short, the writing is terrible and the only human actor has a serious case of stage fright. The other actor being a cockatoo named Kamekichi. Whilst the yakuza is still set on tearing the theatre down, Tachibana sees potential. She even learns that her father used to be the Mankai Company’s director before he disappeared. Yakuza guy decides to give her a chance and tasks her with finding new actors before sunset. Tachibana, the manager and lone actor quickly put on a street act and recruit two new actors. One of them is the young man seen earlier. The group return to the theatre in time. Seeing this yakuza guy decides to give the Mankai Company one more chance to pay off their debt. With two conditions: they must put on four shows within the year with four different troupes and Tachibana has to be the director. Tachibana accepts the challenge. Now she only has one month to put on the first show and have a full house on closing night.

That’s pretty much where the prologue ends. I like the story. There’s a clear conflict and right off the bat the main characters are at a disadvantage. I wanted to be an actor at one point so of course I want to see these young aspiring actors succeed. Even if we might have already seen a glimpse at what’s to come I want to see the journey. Meet all the characters and watch them grow. I know I should have an issue with these being all male troupes but this is an otome. I’m not here for equality, I’m here for the boys. Hot boys with engaging stories.

I like Tachibana as the heroine. She has two clear wounds. Her father is missing,  plot point that may or may not be explored later, and she gave up on her dream of being an actor. Something that she was probably only pushed into because of her past directors telling her she can’t act. But now she’s going to use her knowledge to help save the Mankai Company. She really steps into the role of a leader, helping each actor to improve. She even has the ability to recognise the areas that she needs to improve. She has her doubts sometimes but she doesn’t let it get her down. Ultimately Tachibana has a big heart, is a great leader and has some funny lines/thoughts. Making her a great character to play as.

A3! App

One other character I want to talk about is Matsukawa Isuke, the useless manager. I’m not calling him useless to be mean but it’s a fact. While it’s just been him running the Mankai Company everything has fallen to pieces. They’re in so much debt to the yakuza that the theatre is at risk of being demolished. All that’s left of what was once four acting troupes is a lone newbie actor. They only put on terrible mini plays written by Matsukawa. He also can’t cook. Meals being provided is supposed to be a perk for living in the dorm but that’s not the case with Matukawa cooking them. Even his website setup is terrible. But despite all that, his shabby appearance and cowardice, he has heart. Somehow he always appears cheerful. He believes and loves the Mankai Company and it’s theatre. That’s why he finally tried to seek out Tachibana’s father. So he might be a bit useless but you can’t hate him. He brings comedy to the story. On some occasions he even serves as an ear for Tachibana.

In conclusion, this is just the beginning. I love A3! so far. It’s not the typical otome I like to play. It doesn’t have specific routes for each boy but it doesn’t have to. I love the story, where it’s set and the characters, including the protagonist. If you’re interested why not download it? Read through the prologue and see what you think. Anyone want to add me as a friend? Alternatively you can give the anime a look, something I will be doing in the future. Look out for that.

Thank you for reading and I’ll see you all in the next post.

Rank That Series! Time To Grab Your Alethiometer

Hello and welcome to all you beautiful people to Rank That Series! Having completed the His Dark Materials trilogy I thought why not rank the three books in my prefered order. Spoilers ahead for the books, His Dark Materials TV series and The Golden Compass film. You’ve been warned.

Spoiler Warning!

His Dark Materials follows the adventures of Lyra Belacqua, later Lyra Silvertongue, through not only her world but many others. She makes lifelong friends, confronts otherworldly enemies and ultimately discovers truths about the universe and herself. Lyra and her daemon filled world is something I’ve been in love with since I first watched The Golden Compass (2007). It’s really a crime that it’s taken me so long to sit my butt down and read the books. But I have now and they’ve taken me to places I didn’t expect. So without further ado let’s get started.

3. The Subtle Knife

In third place I’ve put the Subtle Knife, the second book in the trilogy. Whilst reading this book it honestly felt like the intermission between the other two; setting everything up for the next one. I’m not saying it was bad or dismissible but it didn’t feel like the main event. Kind of like a supporting act for a band on tour. They might be cool but they’re not why you’re there.

I like the world of Cittagazze. It’s painted as a deserted oasis. Beautiful empty paradise. There’s a mystery there and it’s a tale of the city stabbing themselves in the back. Essentially this is the universe of the subtle knife. It’s origin story. Here Will acquires the subtle knife so that he and Lyra can easily travel between the worlds. It’s only other purpose is a hiding place.

I may like the city but the citizens, what’s left of them, are a different story. I don’t like the kids. Even before they all turn on Lyra and Will. They’re just not likable to me. Especially Angelica who appears to be the ringleader.

Honestly the events that take place outside of Cittagazze interest me more. In our world Lyra meets Dr Mary Malone. Through their interactions we learn more about the nature of Dust and that there are other ways to communicate with it besides the alethiometer. Such as a computer Dr Malone has in her study and I Ching. There’s no doubt that other forms of divination can be used to communicate with Dust but that’s for a different post.

Meanwhile in Lyra’s world Lee Scoresby is on the hunt for Stanislaus Grumman who is actually John Parry, Will’s dad. This comes to another reason why The Subtle Knife is in the third spot for me. Lee’s death scene. The whole scene leading up to the moment is dramatic. It’s tense. It’s what you’d expect from a showdown. Lee and Hester talking in the aftermath is sad and emotional but at the end of the chapter is the line ‘and then they died’. Just like that. It’s such a quick way to say they died I thought it wasn’t true. I thought that Serafina arrived in time to save them. Nope that’s not the case. I might be the only one that reacted like this but I think Lee’s death could’ve been better. I feel I’m owed mourning time. I love Lee Scoresby. If there’s a character’s death in this series I want to cry over it’s his.

My last gripe is to do with Will. Don’t get me wrong I like Will but when he enters the story I feel like he takes over. Will becomes the leader and centre of attention. I know Lyra’s gone through some character development but she’s still a free spirit. I just feel like some of that gets lost. To me it feels like Will is the leader and Lyra is his assistant rather than the two protagonists having an equal partnership.

My favourite scene in the whole book is when Will and Lyra get the alethiometer back. The whole time I was left on the edge of my seat. Dodging around Mrs Coulter’s daemon is so tense.

In conclusion the Subtle Knife is third because of the dislikable characters, Lyra not being centred stage and mainly for the entire feel of the book being foundations for a much grander adventure. It’s still a good book that presents a few questions that the reader wants answers for.

2. The Amber Spyglass

In second place is The Amber Spyglass. There is so much content when it comes to the Amber Spyglass. A lot more characters are introduced. There are some plot points that are lovely but are ultimately unnecessary. Some parts that have been built up but end up being disappointing. Even so I was more entertained by the final book then The Subtle Knife.

I don’t mind all the new characters introduced because I like them. They’re glimpses into other parallel worlds, an idea that already has been well established. The Gallivespians, Chevalier Tialys and Lady Salmakia are key allies for Lyra and Will. Although they have their own agendas Lyra and Will’s journey would be different without them. The Mulefa are precious and need to be protected. Character wise I have a problem with the angels Balthamos and Baruch. Not with the characters themselves but what happens to them. For starters as soon as they were introduced I loved their relationship and was sad when Baruch died. Obviously Balthamos suffers from the loss and he stays with Will till he rescues Lyra. Once that happens he just disappears until the very end. It just seemed like a waste of the character. Why couldn’t he travel with them? He could’ve dealt with his wounds and earned his sacrifice rather than it happening out of nowhere. It just feels on the verge of Deus ex machina territory having a character that you may or may not remember, depending on how you read, saving the day without anyone knowing.

This leads onto another point, that whole subplot is a little pointless. I never feel any threat from this priest on a journey to kill Mary and neither do the characters. No one even knows he’s after them.

Speaking of threats the same goes for Metatron. He’s supposed to be the main antagonist but the threat isn’t there. When he does show up I still don’t feel like he lives up to the bad guy that the story has been building up. I do like the fight between him, Lord Astriel and Mrs Coulter that ultimately completes the later two’s redemption arc but otherwise he’s not the villain that the rest of the story made him out to be.

Something else that’s anticlimactic is the sin or whatever Lyra might commit that the Magisterium is so afraid of. She falls in love and has sex. That’s it. Fair enough with someone from a parallel universe but nothing really changes after that happens, except her daemon settles. Of course that’s not explicitly stated but all know that’s what happens. This is something that has been building since Northern Lights and what actually happens does not live up to that build up. I was expecting something that would profoundly change the universe and how it works. But no. Instead it’s something that could never happen and nothing would change.

In conclusion there are many disappointments. But beyond those disappointments is a journey. That journey is what I like about this book. A journey of friendship and love. Two people fixing a system that has led to overcrowding and eternal boredom in death. There are great characters and wonderful locations. You just have to look past the parts of the story that could be better.

1. The Northern Lights

The top spot. Number one can only be home to the book that started it all: The Northern Lights or The Golden Compass as it’s titled in America. As I’ve already stated the film adaptation of this story was a favourite of mine when I was a kid. Finally reading the book just made me love the story even more. Really this story can be self contained. You don’t have to read the other two if you don’t want and just have the story end with Lyra walking into the other world. I feel this is Lyra’s hero’s journey. One that prepares her for the adventure she’s about to embark on.

First this story completely focuses on Lyra and her daemon, Pantalaimon. My two favourite characters. Together they face many challenges and grow stronger because of it. The interesting thing is Lyra isn’t your typical hero, she’s a consistent liar. A talent that helps her get through some tough situations.

I love all the characters, maybe not so much Mrs Coulter and her daemon. Although she is a great villain. Very much a rose who knows how to use her thorns. She’s very much a villain you love to hate. Or maybe that’s more towards her daemon. I never like it when that monkey shows up.

One thing that always stuck me was how it was well established that it was a social rule that no one is allowed to touch someone else’s daemon. It’s so well done that when Pan is grabbed by someone in Bolvangar it affects not only Lyra but also the reader. I found it incredibly powerful.

I’m trying to think of something I don’t like and I can’t. I just love it. The story, the characters, the world and the writing is so good. Obviously I have a favourite.

There you have it. My ranking for the His Dark Materials book series. It is a series I enjoyed immensely and will be moving onto the Book of Dust series at some point. Let me know how you’d rank them. Is there anyone out that wouldn’t put Northern Lights in the top spot? Thank you so much for reading and I’ll see you all in the next post.

Spring Anime 2020 Part 2

Hello and welcome to all you beautiful people, here is the second part filled with more upcoming anime for the spring season. Without further ado let’s get into it.

Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shite Shimatta…

One day heiress Katerina Claes is hit hard on the head. This triggers a recollection of memories from her past life: a teenage Japanese girl. Before dying the girl remembered playing an otome game she was obsessed with: Fortune Lover. The world of the game resembles the one she’s now living. But she was cast as the villain who tries to foil the protagonists romances. All endings for Katarina end in death or exile. Using her knowledge of the game Katarina must steer the narrative towards the best ending for her. Will Katarina make it to the end or will happily ever after for the protagonist mean her death?

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Roads Lead to Doom! is based on a light novel by Satoru Yamaguchi. Silver Link brings us one of the isekai of the season and it’s one set in an otome. The protagonist probably isn’t in the role they wanted but that’s got to add to the comedy. This is another series that I’ve seen quite a bit of advertising for.

The trailer does make me want to watch it. I see all the tropes of otome games and I think it’s cool how Katarina reacts to them as well. I can tell this is going to be fun because even though she knows what she needs to do she’s still gonna get swept away and fan girl with these boys around. I think fellow otome fans would really enjoy this series. You can find out on April 4th on Crunchyroll.

No Guns Life 2nd Season

No Guns Life 2nd Season
My Anime List

Juzo Inui is a mercenary for hire, hunting criminal Extended. People who have had mechanical enhancements added to their body’s. Juzo himself is Over-Extended, someone who’s enhancements go beyond legal limits.

Madhouse’s 2nd Season of No Guns Life arrives on Funimation on April 9th. Those of you who have been waiting for the second season that wait is almost over. If you haven’t watched the first season yet there’s plenty of time for you to get all caught up.

Shin Sakura Taisen the Animation

10 years after the great Demon War it’s time again for the international Combat Revue tournament. The Imperial Combat Revue’s Flower Division in Tokyo must juggle the tournament and the potential of a new demon invasion all while trying to keep their home, the Imperial Theater, open.

Sakura Wars the Animation is adding to an already large multimedia franchise including light novels, manga and video games. Studio Sanzigen brings life to the next instalment in this already well established franchise.

I don’t know how I feel about this one. I think I’d have to watch it to really know. For anyone interested Sakura Wars starts April 3rd Funimation.

Shachou, Battle no Jikan desu!

Shachibato! key art spring anime

Minato is the newest president of Kibo Company and is looking to hire the best employees. With thousands of other companies competing in Gatepia. All looking to possess the most Kirakuri, the energy fundamental for the residents of this world.

Shachibato! President, it’s Time for Battle! From Kadokawa is based on a Japan-exclusive character collecting game where the player is the president of a company who hires people to venture into dungeons.

Looking at the trailer I get a sort of Konosuba vibe from it but with different characters obviously. There’s also this nice hybrid between traditional medieval fantasy and more modern technology. So this is another isekai type thing but we all know if we’re isekai trash or not. There’s enough of them out there. The sub and dub of Shachibato! President, it’s Time for Battle! Starts April 5th on Funimation.

Shironeko Project: Zero Chronicle

Shironeko Project ZERO CHRONICLE Blog Key Art

A group of adventurers discover an island in the sky but one of their own falls into darkness. Heeding the words of their fallen companion they use the sky island to search for the Great Runes.

Animated by Project No 9 Shironeko Project: Zero Chronicle is based on a free to play mobile game. The events of the series are taken from the game’s 3rd anniversary event. Obviously this is another fantasy show. Not gonna lie when I saw the floating island part my mind went to Norn 9 but I’m sure that’s a completely different story to this.

Looks like some epic fight scenes are in store. I can spot elves, demons, angels and the token humans. Honestly all I have to say is that it looks like a fantasy adventure. I can’t say that I can spot anything hugely special but then again I’ve watched quite a few trailers now that are like this. This is another one for all the fantasy action fans out there. Funimation April 6th is when this adventure begins.

Hachi-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou!

Ichinomiya Shingo, an ordinary office worker, goes to sleep one night with thoughts of the working day to come. Only when he wakes up he’s no longer in his room. He’s not even in his own body. He’s inside the body of a 6 year old boy who’s the youngest child of a noble family in hard times. He has no skills that will help the family manage the large amount of land they own but he does possess a very rare talent. Magic. Although his abilities can help the family prosper as they once did so far it’s only brought trouble. Will Wendelin Von Benno Baumeister realise his full potential? Will he be able to save his family?

The 8th son? Are you kidding me? Is another isekai based on a light novel written by Y.A with animation produced by Shin-ei Animation and SynergySP. This is a fantasy adventure that is more than likely appealing to anyone that has been intrigued by other fantasy adventures coming out this season.

I’m not gonna lie at this point things are just starting to look the same to me. It must be how trailers are down. It’s coming down to whether I like the characters now because to me the stories and plots are starting to merge into one. I like fantasy adventures. I do but there are only so many different ways I can describe similar trailers. April 2nd on Crunchyroll is when we can see what the characters are like.

Fugou Keiji: Balance:UNLIMITED

Modern Crimes Prevention Headquarters is a crime division filled only with people who’ve caused the police problems. Detective Daisuke Kambe is very materialistic, opting to use his wealth to solve crimes rather than skills. His partner Haru Kato is the complete opposite, believing that money isn’t everything. Together they must put their differences aside in order to solve the cases they recieve.

Produced by CloverWorks, The Millionaire Detective- Balance: Unlimited is inspired by a novel of the same name written by Yasuraka Tsutsui. Finally something that isn’t an isekai or fantasy based, I can talk about something else. Right off the bat I thought of Psycho Pass with this being a detective show and the main characters being part of an organisation where people who’ve “caused the police problems” work. Clearly this is going to take a different direction but that’s where my mind went first.

The trailer doesn’t give much away but I already want to punch Daisuke Kambe in the face. Several times. Is that a good thing? I don’t know but I do know the dynamic between these two characters is sure to be interesting. There’s a reason completely opposite characters are put together. It gives way to conflict and potential for development. Anyone interested in detective shows and mystery this is one for you. The Millionaire Detective starts April 9th on Funimation.

Nami yo Kiite Kure

wave listen to me anime key art

On a night out drinking Minare Koda ends up spilling the woes of her love life to a radio station worker. Whilst at work the following day she’s shocked to hear her rant airing on the radio. Angered, she storms down to the station only to be tricked by the station director into doing an impromptu talk show. From then on she gets pulled deeper and deeper into the world of radio.

From Sunrise, Wave, Listen to Me! Is based on the manga written by Hiroaki Samura. Another show set in our own world with the promise of comedic hijinks for this season.

So I watched a trailer and it followed the synopsis. Then she was fighting a bear. A bear. I think this is the first trailer that has confused me this season. To go further there was also a scene with aliens. For a show that’s centred around radio broadcasting that is a turn I was not expecting. If anything I want to watch this show because of the bear fight. My curiosity and need to know why is pulling me to watch this series. Wave, Listen to Me! Starts April 3rd on Funimation. I will be watching and finding the truth about the bear.

Kitsutsuki Tantei-Dokoro

At the end of the Meiji Era, in response to a murder case broke poet Ishikawa Takuboku sets up a detective agency he calls Woodpecker Detective’s Office. The agency involves themselves in one bizarre case after another all over Tokyo.

From Liden Films, Woodpecker Detective’s Office is based on a mystery novel by Kei Ii. Two detective series in one season, what a treat. In amongst all the fantasy and isekai we get literary men solving strange cases.

I like my detective shows to have something different about them and I think this one has it. Poets and authors solving crimes is interesting and probably possible if they’re crime writers. From the trailer there’s nothing too outrageous. From one of the scenes I also get the sense there might be a Sherlock Holmes style of explaining the crime. We’ll have to wait till April 13th on Crunchyroll.

In conclusion I’ve done my best to talk about all the anime of the spring season that can be viewed on official streaming sites. Mainly Crunchyroll and Funimation. Both of these sites and Netflix are bound to continue to announce new line ups for the spring season. I can already tell that for the summer season I’m going to change how I cover it. How you may be asking. I don’t know at this time but I’ll figure it out. What anime are you planning on watching this season? Thank you so much for reading and I’ll see you all in the next post.

Spring Anime 2020 Part 1

Hello and welcome to all you beautiful people. Today we’ll be looking at what anime the spring season has to offer. If we’re all going to be stuck inside for the time being why not have a look at something new. So without further ado let’s get into it.

Within Tokyo’s performance and theatre district lies a once popular all-male theatre group called Mankai Company and Izumi Tachibana is steping in as the new owner and creative director. With only one actor and yakuza debt collectors knocking at the door she has her work cut out for her in restoring the group to its former glory. Will she find the talent? Can they bloom into the actors she needs?

A3! Act! Addict! Actors! is based on a mobile game of the same name. I’ve had an interest in trying the game for a while but had no idea it had been released on Iphone. I thought it was only on android. I’m excited to see I was wrong and intent to give the game a play through as soon as I can. I’m even more excited to see an anime adaptation I can watch. The show originally premiered in January but due to production reasons it was decided to postpone the rest until spring. First we have the spring and summer troupes this season and according to the trailer there will be an autumn and winter troupes season between July and September. There is a possibility that might have been delayed as well. The production companies behind the anime adaptation are 3Hz and P.A. Works. Two companies that have well known animes under their belts.

Looking at the trailer immediately you can tell this is an otome anime. The colours are bright, the music is upbeat and there are sakura petals floating around. The images and music tell you this is an otome, probably in the romcom genre. The trailer doesn’t tell you anything about the story but introduces you to all the characters. First the boys and then our protagonist Izumi Tachibana. With the boys they have a little profile that you’d normally see when reading about the characters either in game or on a website. It includes their age, height, birthday and blood type. You know, all important information. Now that I’ve seen the opening for the game I can say the trailer feels like a toned down highschool anime version of it that focuses on the spring troupe.

Despite it’s generic feel I’m going to watch this one. I love theatre, musicals and otomes so this series should be right up my street. It’s a musical otome that no doubt will be compared to Uto no Prince Sama but that doesn’t mean it should be overlooked. I do hope that this series doesn’t suffer from the same problem most anime adaptations of otomes face but that’s a topic for another day. Three episodes are currently available on Funimation both sub and dub. I am sure you can find it on other sources too. If you’re in the mood for some romcom shenanigans with songs why not give it a look yourself. If you enjoyed the game this would also be a good anime for you. Let me know how it compares.

APPARE-RANMAN! Spring key visual

A brilliant socially awkward engineer, Sorano Appare, and a cowardly samurai, Isshiki Kosama, find themselves drifting on a boat from Japan to America. Both penniless they decide to compete in the Trans-America Wild Race. From Los Angeles to New York they race across the American West in a steam-powered car they built themselves to win the prize money which will be enough to get them home.

Appare-Ranman! Is a brand new series set in the 19th century. This is another series being produced by P.A. Works. This is an original anime series with a manga counterpart announced for it on March 4th.

There are three trailers I could find. The first sets up the main characters and their situation accompanied by traditional sounding music. The second introduces more characters and we see the start of the race. Finally the third trailer has the most information. For the first time we hear the voices of the characters. Accompanied with character introductions we get a glimpse at what drives each of them. Kind of like little tasters. Just enough to intrigue and know what’s what. I want to give the first episode a watch and go from there. Just from the trailers I can’t quite tell whether I’ll like it or not. I get the sense that the story of the day to overarching plot will lean more towards story of the day. An obstacle will occur each episode that will hinder their progress in the race but ultimately they’ll get back on track.

If races are your thing then this is a good anime for you. It is also an original anime which always intrigues me. It starts April 10th and can be found on Funimation.

Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame ni wa Shudan wo Erandeiraremasen 2nd Season

Ascendance of a Bookworm

Myne continues her quest for books as she begins her training as an apprentice priestess.

Ascendance of a Bookworm by Ajia-do is back for a second season. I think it can be classed as an isekai, it does follow a girl who dies and is reborn in a different world. I’m surprised I didn’t know about this anime sooner. The main character sounds like a kindred spirit to me. I know I’ll be giving it a look when I can. Season 2 starts April 4th on Crunchyroll.

BNA: Brand New Animal

TV Tropes

Michiru was living her life as a normal human until one day she’s suddenly turned into a tanuki-human. She runs away to Anima City, a place where animal-humans are free to live as themselves. There she meets Shirou, a wolf-human who hates humans. Together they look for an answer to why Michiru was turned into an animal-human but quickly get wrapped up in trouble.

I can’t find much information about BNA right now. It’s the newest anime by TRIGGER. You know the studio behind Kill la Kill and other great anime series so I’m definitely going to give this a watch when I can. Everything else I can find is that some episodes are already on Netflix’s Japan and regular uploads onto the streaming service will start 9th April. From what I can find it will be on Netflix worldwide on April 23rd. I really hope that’s the case. Even if I don’t know much about what’s going on I trust TRIGGER.

Shokugeki no Soma: Gou no Sara

Yukihira Soma and the rest of Totsuki Academy compete in The Blue!

Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma: The Fifth Plate is the fifth and final season of Food Wars. The second anime in the list produced by J.C. Staff. I have to admit I’m very far behind in watching Food Wars, like still making my way through the first season. So I’m not watching anything and have very little information. I take spoilers very seriously. I have no idea what The Blue is but I imagine it’s a type of culinary competition. Shokugeki no Soma: Gou no Sara will start airing on crunchyroll April 10th. To all those caught up I hope you enjoy and one day I will have watched all of Food Wars! To all the others thinking about watching Food Wars! I highly recommend it, just make sure you’ve eaten or have something to eat with you while you watch.

Fruits Basket 2nd Season

Tohru Honda and the Soma boys get up to more shenanigans.

Honestly I can’t find a synopsis for the 2nd season but I can assume that’s the general premise. I know that it will follow on from the first season and continue the root of the manga. This is something Fruits Baskets fans have been waiting for and I’m pretty sure anticipating since last year. TMS Entertainment is giving the fans what they want. The second season promises for the first time more scenes from the manga will be brought to life. This is yet another anime I haven’t watched. It has been confirmed that Fruits Basket Season 2 will air on Funimation and Crunchyroll on April 6th.

Shuichi Kagaya is an ordinary high school student until he discovers he has a mysterious power to turn into a gun wielding cartoon dog. He saves a fellow classmate who’s trapped in a fire with this new ability but she has secrets of her own. She’s after the murderer of her family- her sister and will use any means to get her. How far is Kurea Aoki willing to go for vengeance? And what will it cost Kagaya?

Gleipnir is based on a manga of the same name by Kodansha Comics. The production studio is Pine Jam, from what I can tell a relatively new studio who also did Gamers! From the synopsis I’m already interested. Anything with the ridiculous idea of the protagonist turning into a cartoon dog is worth at least having a look.

The trailers I can find don’t give much away. From the snippets in the trailers I can find I already tell that Kagaya deserves better. There aren’t any trailers with english subtitles so I have no idea what the characters are saying but it does look interesting. And different. This is one on my list to watch this season.

This will appeal to anyone who likes action and other seinen anime. You can find out the mysteries of what’s going on April 5th on Funimation.

IDOLiSH7: Second BEAT!

Takashi Production brings seven men with a variety of different personalities together to form idol group IDOLiSH7. Each with their own unique charms and untapped idol potential they start captivating the hearts of audiences. They navigate through the harsh idol world but always keep their dreams close to their hearts.

IDOLiSH7: Second BEAT! Is the second series of IDOLiSH7 if that wasn’t obvious. This TROYCA anime will continue following the members of idol group IDOLiSH7. It should be no surprise that this is a musical shoujo. Something that is up my street but of course I would watch the first season first. You can watch the boys on their journey to achieving their dreams April 5th on Crunchyroll.

Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai? Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen

Student council leaders Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane continue their games with each other to get the other to ask them on a date.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War has a second season that I know most people have been looking forward to. I think the synopsis I pieced together is accurate. I haven’t watched the first season so I don’t know what happened. What I do know is that the premise interests me and sounds hilarious. Basically a romance anime where the protagonists are tsunderes. For everyone that’s been waiting for a second season from A1- Pictures it starts April 11th on Funimation. Funimation has also announced that later this year they will have a dub for both seasons.

kakushigoto anime key art

Kakushi Goto is an adult manga creator who must hide his work at home to protect his young daughter, Hime, from it’s mature content.

Kakushigoto is an anime adaptation of the manga of the same name. Ajia-do brings to life a slice of life comedy that looks at the relationship between a father and his daughter.

From the trailer it looks rather sweet, at least Hime does. I’m willing to give this one a look. Slice of life isn’t normally the type of show I watch but I’d like to see their relationship and what shinanigens ensue. If you like slice of life and the relationships between characters this might be the show for you. You can find it on Funimation beginning April 2nd.

Kami no Tou: Tower of God

There exists a tower. Reach the top of that tower and you can become a god. Everything in the world is yours. Rachel climbs the tower so that she can see the stars. With Bam who needs nothing else but her.

Tower of God is an anime adaptation of the webtoon created by SIU. One of the first eight titles announced as a Crunchyroll Original produced by Telecom Animation Film. If anyone follows Crunchyroll on social media I’m sure you’ve seen this being advertised. I love a fantasy adventure so I wonder what this one has in store.

I get a Hunger Games tournament vibe from the trailer. Each floor of the tower holds new tests and many people from all walks of life are fighting to get to the top. We mainly follow Bam as he follows the love of his life, Rachel, into the tower. To the other hopefuls he’s considered one of the weakest to climb the tower but we all know how this goes. Bam will rise to the occasion and prove he’s just as worthy to be climbing the tower of God. It does look rather exciting with interesting characters. It starts April 1st on Crunchyroll.

In a world where music vanishes from existence lives a mysterious girl with an auxiliary port on her body. When she’s connected to an amp something once lost is brought back. She meets a young teen and together they embark on a journey that will rock society and restore music to the world.

Listeners is an original anime created by Jin and Dai Sato and produced by MAPPA. Looking at the synopsis my mind goes to 2112 by Rush. Fair enough it’s nowhere near the same concept except that they’re both set in worlds without music.

Okay the trailer was not what I was expecting but I am pleased. The use of colours and the anime style is cool. I really like the concept and where the journey can go. The enthusiasm of both the main characters contrasts greatly to this large area of trash that we’re presented with at the beginning. This is another one that can be put on the list. If you’re intrigued by the synopsis I suggest you check out the trailer and see if it really is something you’d like to watch. Listeners starts April 3rd on Funimation.

If I keep going then this post is going to be really long so I’ve split this into two parts. Be sure to catch the rest of the anime you can expect to see this season in the next post. See you then.

The Dead Never Rest by Heather Bos

It’s coming.

The biting chill crawling over my skin is a clear sign It’s in the city. A gut wrenching stench of death and decay follows behind me like a fly to a rotting corpse.

It’s coming for me and It knows where I am.

I run through the abandoned streets, lungs already ablaze and legs aching, towards my only hope. A weapon that can end my torment is somewhere within this labyrinth. I just have to get there before It catches up to me.

I swiftly turn into another moonlit alley, sharply slamming into the wall. That’ll likely bruise but I can’t stop. No matter how much every fibre of my being screams for me to, I can’t.

I must be close now. I have to be.

I swerve around another corner and there it is. The Museum of the Undead. Resting place of Lifewarden: a blade that can destroy any undead creature.

With salvation in sight I push myself harder. Adrenaline gives an extra boost to what little energy I have left but that kick is gone as quickly as it appears.

There It is, blocking the alley’s exit.

The revenant.

I freeze. Feeling my entire being turn to ice. Terror consuming me. I reflexively grab my dagger. Ready for anything.

The creature just glares at me. I’ve never seen what It looks like, even now It stands shrouded in darkness, except the eyes. Eyes that were forged in the pits of hell. Fire swirling around a bottomless void, consumed solely by anger. A hellscape I see everytime I close my own eyes.

We stand staring at each other for what feels like an eternity. My breathing evens out and I dare to do something I’ve been too afraid to try. I speak to It.

“Who are you!?” I shout a little shakily.

It starts to laugh. A deep mocking laugh. Then It steps into the moonlight.

“What’s the matter baby sister? Don’t recognize me?” It taunts with a smirk.

“Caleb…?” I breathe.

Of course it was Caleb. Who else would have such a vendetta against me? He looks almost the same as the day I murdered him.

His messy shoulder length brown hair is now caked in dirt and mud. His skin appears ashen grey, like a ghost with flesh. His condescending grin revealing blacken gums and several missing teeth. A large dried blood stain flows from the dagger shaped hole in his forest green tunic. Looking closely I spy his ribs and the flesh rotting around the wound. My gaze lingers on that spot for a moment. Guilt mixing with the terror inside me.

I snap back to reality at the familiar sound of a sword being unsheathed. I behold the now armed conscious corpse of my brother.

“I’ve grown bored with our little game of cat and mouse Amarella.” he says with that cheshire cat grin still plastered on his face. Gripping his sword with both hands he prepares to strike. “Time for you to die.”

Caleb charges at me.

I dodge out of the way at the last minute, using the wall to jump over his head. I break into a sprint as soon as my feet hit the ground straight towards the museum. I have to get that sword.

I barely register a pleased growl from behind me. A clear sign of how much Caleb enjoys the hunt. Like a wolf chasing a rabbit. A true predator.

Closing in on my beacon of hope I ready my dagger. I’ve only got one shot. I don’t need to turn around to know Caleb’s already gaining on me, he was always the fastest. I take a steading breath and hurl the dagger.

Smash! The window shatters and I leap through the opening.

When I land a heavy hand shoves my face into the shattered pieces of broken glass.

“Tsk tsk tsk. Still trying to run away.” Caleb scolds with enjoyment.

He throws my body across the room like a rag doll. Pain shoots through my body when I crash onto the wooden floor. Caleb plunges his sword into the ground.

“What happened to the brave warrior who shoved a blade through my heart?”

He stalks towards me, cracking his knuckles. Rage and bloodlust burning in his nightmarish eyes. I start pushing myself off the ground but I’m quickly met with a harsh kick to the stomach. He kicks me over and over again until his foot collides so strongly with my fragile body that I fly into the next room. Caleb slowly strides in behind my beaten form. That feral grin painting his putrid face.

“Caleb I can explain.” I cough out, spitting blood.

“This isn’t something you can fix with your precious words.” he spat at me. “It’s pretty clear what happened. Now stand up. The least I can do is let you fight for your life. A courtesy I was denied.”

Caleb throws my dagger to the ground in front of me. The blade lodging itself in the wood closer to my head then I’m comfortable with. With great effort I yank the dagger from the floor and slowly rise.

“I had no choice.” I finally reply.

“There’s always a choice.”

Caleb charges at me again, fists ready to strike. Amazingly I dodge every attack he throws whilst backing away. He mirrors every step I make, anger growing with every  missed swing. My luck runs out when my back hits a wall. One solid punch to the face sends me straight back to the floor.

“Fight back!” he growls. Kicking me again to emphasise his fury.

I look up into his eyes and thrust my dagger into his stomach. A low menacing chuckle erupts from Caleb. Seizing my opportunity I dash to the otherside of the room. There on the wall rests Lifewarden.

I rip the sword free from it’s confides. A bright white light surrounds the blade once it’s in my hands. I turn to my brother to see that grin and my dagger in his possession.

Without fear I run at him, Lifewarden poised. Caleb makes no move to defend himself. I go to strike but quickly find my head colliding with the floor. He’d kicked me. Lifewarden slides out of my grip. Panic and fear overshadowed by the disorientation.

This is it. This is how I die. Caleb towers over me with that grin. That sickening grin that refused to leave his face.

“Quick or slow dear sister? I’ve thought of nothing else but the slow agonizing death I would bestow upon you.” He flips me over with yet another kick. Eyes examining my broken body, spying the despair reflected in my own eyes. “Seeing you now however, broken and pathetic. I must confess I feel something that might be considered pity.”

I spit at his feet as I sluggishly back away from him. Caleb in turn places a foot on my chest and stabs my dagger into my left bicep. A bloodcurdling scream explodes from my throat. Metal rips apart muscle fibres, scrapes past bone with a nauseating crunch before embedding itself in the wooden floor. Every vein and artery throughout my body ignites in agony. Tears prick my eyes. Caleb closes his own, listening to my screams of anguish, and blissfully sighs.

“Slow it is.” he whispers to himself. “I want to listen to more of your beautiful singing. To really savour my revenge.”

My right hand frantically searches blind for Lifewarden. At the feeling of cool leather I quickly wrap my hand around the hilt like a vice and plunge Lifewarden into Caleb’s chest. The triumph and pleasure drains from his face. His body slumps into the sword and my strength gives out. Caleb falls to the floor beside me. There’s a silence as I watch the life bleed out of his corpse.

“Why?” he requests on borrowed breath. Not asking about this moment but my first betrayal.

“You were going to slaughter millions of innocent lives. It was the only way to stop you.” I confessed with my own quiet voice.

“It was for the greater good of the kingdom.”

“No Caleb. You grew to love the killing.” I pause, looking into his dimming eyes. “It destroyed me when I stabbed you. Seeing the betrayal in your eyes. But you weren’t my brother anymore. I’m sorry.” A waterfall of tears cascade down my face. All the guilt, sorrow and pain breaking the surface.

Caleb lightly touches my hand.

“Thank you Amarella. For saving me.” he softly says with a sweet smile. A glimpse at the brother I grew up with. “Goodbye sweet sister.”

The last I see of him is the light in his eyes going out before his entire body melts into ash. The wind quickly carries them away. Lifewarden clatters to the ground.

“Goodbye dear brother.” I mutely whisper.

I silently cry myself into a slumber consumed by darkness, clinging to the remnants of my brother Caleb in my hand.

Time to Find the Keys

Hello and welcome to all you beautiful people, today we’re going to be looking at the Netflix series Locke & Key. It was first released February 7th 2020 and created by Meredith Averil, Aron Eli Coleite and Carlton Cuse. The show is based on a series of graphic novels of the same name written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez.

The Locke siblings move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, after the tragic death of their father. They quickly find magical keys that hold the secrets of what happened to their dad and all the things he didn’t tell them.

I didn’t read the original graphic novel series so this will entirely focus on the show. So without further ado let’s get into it.

I was drawn to this series because of the magical keys. To me it was an original way for magic to be used and I still see it that way. I like the magical keys. The problem is I don’t think they were utilised to their full potential by the main characters. The villain shows the audience how the keys can be used. Yes one key is used by one of the siblings that ultimately changes her personality but generally the keys are in the background. I do really like the designs for the keys.

I like the emotional journey and overall character development the main characters go through. All of the Locke family has an obviously big wound that affects them all in different ways. Through the episodes they eventually face their wounds and become stronger as a family because of it. The mystery of Keyhouse and what happened to their dad there leads them on this journey. Finding truth brings understanding.

The villain is also a plus for the series. Dodge is not one of those antagonists you’re going to love to hate but she is a decent villain. She has a clear goal and knows how to utilise the tools at her disposal to get what she wants. Her presence is felt throughout the series which is the sign of a decent villain for me.

Locke and Key is very much a supernatural teen drama series similar to the Vampire diaries but with no vampires or werewolves. However it does have some typical teen drama elements and story subplots. For some people that can be even scarier than monsters that might show up. This isn’t something I like or dislike. Really I tolerate it. I can deal with the love triangle and bullies getting their comeuppance as long as the ratio with the main plot is balanced. For Locke and Key I’d say it’s around that level.

Now for the dislikes, most pertaining to the several plot holes and terrible decisions the main characters make. Look I know the main characters are in their teens and a bit younger but some of their decisions are questionable. Especially in the final few episodes. I don’t want to go into detail and spoil anything but I am letting you know they’re there. You will question why they did this or that. It all comes down to how much that’ll bother you.

Something that is odd is Bode disappears until the plot needs him to be there. You notice it because Bode is the one who first finds the keys and knows they need to protect them from Dodge, yet in some episodes he’s absent for a good chunk of time. Some might consider this a good thing as Bode can be a little annoying sometimes. Maybe Bode knows to steer away from that teen drama. The logical explanation is that the actor is young and it’s probably best he’s only there when he needs to be.

It’s pretty evident that a season 2 is on the way, the ending does set it up. From what I can tell it hasn’t been picked up for another season yet. Whether another season is on the way or not, writing for a second season is already being worked on. Obviously a major change they can make is filling in the plot holes and making sure that there aren’t anymore in the future. I would like to see more keys be discovered and for the main characters to use them more. Maybe experiment with them so they can better use them in the future. A plot I would like to see is looking at the origin of the keys. Doing research I know it’s an important part in the graphic novels so I’d like to see it in the series.

In conclusion, Locke & Key isn’t the standout series of the year but some will find it entertaining. Like I did. It’s a short series filled with magic. Just make sure to look over the main characters’ lack of common sense and plot holes that are scattered about. If you don’t mind teen drama and want your magic presented in a different way why not give Locke and Key a try. Who knows you might find it entertaining despite its flaws too. Thank you for reading and I look forward to seeing you all in my next post.
